Barnyard Animal Bookends

Farm animal bookends

Each child will end up with a completely different set of bookends when they pick their favorite farm animals in this easy barnyard bookends craft. Be sure to have a large assortment of animals on hand!

What You Need: 2 wood blocks (sanded, or older children can sand their own); 8 craft sticks; wood glue or another stong but safe glue (supervise children carefully); acrylic paints; brushes; assorted plastic farm animals and accessories.

How to Make It: Paint wood blocks green for grass (or yellow for hay, or any color they’d like!). Paint craft sticks white or brown. Let dry. Glue sticks into fence shape as shown. Let dry. Glue to wood block. Repeat for other bookend. Arrange animals in barnyard scene and adhere with glue.

George Washington’s ax

George Washington ax or hatchet
For Presidents’ Day, in honor of the lore involving George Washington and the cherry tree, here’s an ax project. It’s easy; no lie.
What You Need: 1 Popsicle stick (craft stick); yellow construction paper; glue or tape; scissors; black crayon or marker.
How to Make It: Pre-cut or trace ax head shape on yellow construction paper. Kids simply glue or tape middle of ax head to one end of craft stick and (optional) add 2 black dots to simulate screws.

Popsicle stick Valentine’s Day butterfly

Preschoolers can present their love bug with this cute butterfly on Valentine’s Day. It’s quick and fun, and can double as a bookmark.
What You Need: Popsicle stick (craft stick); 2 medium foam heats and 2 small foam hearts; 2 googly eyes; glue (foam glue works best).
How to Make It: Glue small hearts inside larger one and then glue to Popsicle stick, overlapping slightly. Glue on 2 googly eyes.

Popsicle stick sled Christmas ornament

Kids’ names fit perfectly on these little sleds that can be hung from the Christmas tree or in the classroom.

What You Need: 6 craft sticks; length of ribbon; glue; glitter glue.
How to Make It: Arrange 5 sticks in sled shape as shown, touching and on a flat surface. Spread glue on back of sixth stick and place it across the base, about 1 1/2″ from the top. Let dry and tie on ribbon. Use glitter glue to write child’s name. Optional: You could punch or cut out little mittens, hats and boots to glue to the sled to look like someone is using it!

Popsicle stick reindeer ornament

Have preschoolers make a “herd” of these reindeer and decorate a whole tree!

What You Need: 3 Popsicle sticks (craft sticks); 2 googly eyes; red pom pom; hole punch and holly-shaped punch (or make a template and cut them out); red and green cardstock; ribbon; glue.
How to Make It: Arrange 2 craft sticks in a V shape. Overlap third craft stick about 3/4 inches from top of V. Use glue to attach eyes and pom pom nose. Punch out and glue on 2 holly leaves and 3 berries (or whatever you’d like). Tie length of ribbon to both sides to hang ornament.
