Valentine owl craft

“Hoo loves you?” This easy-to-make owl. Let preschoolers write or draw their own message on the owl’s white, paper plate belly.

What You Need: Dessert size paper plate; red and pink construction paper or cardstock; 2 red foam hearts; heart-shaped punch (or just use a third foam heart); 2 large googly eyes; black pen; glue; scissors.

How to Make It: Pre-trace a long half-heart shape for the wings and two wide heart shapes (pink slightly smaller than red) for the children to cut out and unfold. Cut apart long wings and place one on either side of the paper plate body. Glue pink heart inside red heart and glue head to body. Add eyes and punched heart beak. Stick on foam hearts for feet. Have child right name or add a message to white plate.

Butterfly TP tube craft

This pink and red butterfly is a fun Valentine’s Day craft for preschoolers. They’ll love decorating the wings. You can give them a head-start by cutting out the wings ahead of time.

What You Need: 1 toilet paper tube; red and pink construction paper or cardstock (I used cardstock); 1 white pipe cleaner; 2 googly eyes; foam hearts; scissors; glue; black marker; pencil; tape.

How to Make It: Fold red cardstock in half and draw half of a wing shape. Cut and open to reveal wings. Cut pink cardstock the length and width of a toilet paper tube and adhere around the tube using glue or tape. Adult should cut pipe cleaner in half and help child roll ends around a pencil for curly antennae. Tape inside toilet paper tube body. Glue on eyes and draw mouth. Glue or tape wings to back of body and decorate with foam hearts, markers, or any way you’d like.

Flamingo heart Valentine

Flamingo Valentine

One of my son’s school friends made him this sweet heart-shaped flamingo Valentine. It’s fun to bend the legs and neck and “pose” the flamingo!

What You Need: Pink pipe cleaners; pink cardstock or construction paper; pink patterned paper (optional); heart shaped template or punch (or freehand or trace a heart); black marker; googly eye; glue.

How to Make It: Cut out two hearts that are the same size. Bend pipe cleaner as shown to make neck and legs (for a large flamingo, you may need two pipe cleaners; for a small one you’ll want to cut one apart). Glue two hearts together, securing the pipe cleaners in the process. Cut two head shapes (an adult may want to make a template for the kids). Use black marker to make bill. Glue on googly eye(s). Glue head pieces together at the end of the neck. Bend pipe cleaners to position head and legs. Child can write name or Valentine message on one side of the flamingo.

Mother’s Day flower corsage craft

Mother's Day corsage

Preschoolers can make this pretty corsage and present it to mom on Mother’s Day!

What You Need: 2 jumbo-size muffin tin liners; 2 regular (cupcake) size liners; red marker; section from egg carton; yellow paint; green pipe cleaner; paintbrush; scissors; adhesive (glue, stapler or tape).

How to Make It: Paint egg carton section yellow and let dry. Have children cut into the ruffled sides of the liners, from the edge to where the ruffled part ends. They can make cuts about 1/2″ apart, or make designs or whatever they’d like. Run red marker around edges of each liner. Stack liners and secure in center with stapler or glue. Bend pipe cleaner into leaf shapes and secure on back with stapler or tape. Glue or tape yellow egg carton section to center.

Paper plate Valentine holder

Let your preschoolers decorate their own Valentine holders before exchanging Valentines.
What You Need: 2 standard or dessert-size paper plates; stapler; scissors; hole punch; glue; length of red yarn; various construction paper scraps and foam hearts, glitter, etc.
How to Make It: Adult may need to assemble heart, or help the children with it. Fold both plates in half and place one inside the other. Reach in with stapler and staple together in a few places to secure. Use scissors to round edges into heart shape. Punch 2 holes at top and tie one end of yarn in each hole. Set out supplies for kids to glue onto heart!

Popsicle stick Valentine’s Day butterfly

Preschoolers can present their love bug with this cute butterfly on Valentine’s Day. It’s quick and fun, and can double as a bookmark.
What You Need: Popsicle stick (craft stick); 2 medium foam heats and 2 small foam hearts; 2 googly eyes; glue (foam glue works best).
How to Make It: Glue small hearts inside larger one and then glue to Popsicle stick, overlapping slightly. Glue on 2 googly eyes.

Straw bead and heart necklace

Preschools can string these heart necklaces quickly and easily, and then present them to Mom for a Valentine’s Day gift.
What You Need: Red or red-and-white striped straw or straw beads; foam hearts; red yarn; hole punch.
How to Make It: If manufactured straw beads are unavailable, adult should precut short lengths of straw as well as punch hole near top of each foam heart. Set out supplies for preschoolers to string as they wish. Help child tie knot to make necklace or bracelet.

Valentine’s Day dog

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with this sweetheart of a dog. The littlest preschoolers may need help with the pipe cleaners and affixing the heart “head,” but remember: Enjoy the process!
What You Need: 1 straw; 2 red pipe cleaners; 1 large pink foam heart; 2 small red foam hearts; red pom pom; 2 googly eyes; glue (foam glue works best); scissors; cellophane tape.
How to Make It: Glue small red hearts overlapping behind large pink heart so it looks like dog ears and a head. Glue pom pom nose and 2 googly eyes. Set aside to dry. Cut straw (adult job) however long you’d like your dog’s body to be (ours is 6 inches). Insert one pipe cleaner through the straw and curl one end for a tail and bend the other end up and then forward for the dog’s neck and head. Cut second pipe cleaner in half (adult job) and twist each over the first pipe cleaner and bend at ends to form feet. Use tape to affix head to pipe cleaner.

Love bug clothespin clip

Perfect for Valentine’s Day or anytime, this love bug or butterfly heart clip can be used as a chip clip, paper holder and so on. Or you can add a magnet to the back and put it on your fridge!
What You Need: Clothespin; 2 small googly eyes; 4 foam hearts in 2 sizes; half of a pink pipe cleaner; glue (special foam-friendly glue works best on the foam).
How to Make It: Wrap pink pipe cleaner around flat end of clothespin and glue to secure. Glue googly eyes to flat end and let dry. Glue small foam hearts inside large ones and glue both sets point-to-point inside the clothespin (you may need to overlap them a bit).

Pom Pom Valentine heart monster

These cute pom pom monster mascots may bring back memories for moms who grew up in the ’70s and ’80s. Now, kids can make their own little monsters with heart feet and googly eyes.
What You Need: Large pom pom, 2 googly eyes, pink construction paper or cardstock, pencil, glue. (Optional: heart punch.)
How to Make It: Punch or cut out (using classic technique of folding paper and drawing half of heart) heart shape from construction paper that’s slightly larger than the pom pom. Glue googly eyes to pom pom. Glue pom pom to heart with the curved parts forward to they look like feet.
