Mother's Day corsage

Preschoolers can make this pretty corsage and present it to mom on Mother’s Day!

What You Need: 2 jumbo-size muffin tin liners; 2 regular (cupcake) size liners; red marker; section from egg carton; yellow paint; green pipe cleaner; paintbrush; scissors; adhesive (glue, stapler or tape).

How to Make It: Paint egg carton section yellow and let dry. Have children cut into the ruffled sides of the liners, from the edge to where the ruffled part ends. They can make cuts about 1/2″ apart, or make designs or whatever they’d like. Run red marker around edges of each liner. Stack liners and secure in center with stapler or glue. Bend pipe cleaner into leaf shapes and secure on back with stapler or tape. Glue or tape yellow egg carton section to center.

Here’s an easy craft that uses ready-made foam pieces and a small terra cotta pot. This is a great way to fill a short stretch of crafting time without needing to get out the glue and other messy supplies. (Although at FreePreschoolCrafts.com, we’re big fans of getting messy!)

What You Need: Terra cotta flower pot; adhesive-backed foam animals, bugs, flowers, etc.
How to Make It: Give each child a flower pot and offer a nice variety of foam pieces to choose from in decorating his or her special flower pot. These make a great gift.

Craft stick picture frame for Father’s Day

What You Need: 4″ x 6″ photo, glue that works on wood, glitter glue, multicolored sequins, 5 “jumbo” size craft sticks, magnetic strip, scissors.

How You Make It: Arrange craft sticks so that two are parallel and one crosses them about 3/4″ from the bottom. Secure with glue. Arrange last two sticks so they meet in a “point” at the top. Make sure your picture will fit behind house shape and glue at top and sides. Glue sequins to craft sticks and write name using glitter glue.

Child’s no-bake clay handprint gift

A clay handprint impression from a preschooler is always a welcome gift for Father’s Day, Mother’s Day or any other occasion. This recipe is enough to make about three handprints.

What You Need: 3/4 cup salt, 2 cups flour, 3/4 cup water, 1/2 teaspoon alum powder (alum is a preservative; only use it if you want the dough to last a long time AND you know your kids won’t eat the dough), mixing supplies, paint, paintbrush, pointy object (paper clip, toothpick, etc.) to write name and date.

How You Make It: Mix dry ingredients in bowl, add water gradually and knead dough. Form into ball, flatten to about 1/2″ to 3/4″ thick and even out edges using your hands or a plastic knife. Child presses hand, with fingers apart, into clay. Adult can etch name and date with pointy object, or paint it on later. Let dry (at least overnight) and paint.
“We tried it” tip: We tried baking this clay, but after an hour at 300 degrees it was still soft on the bottom. It hardened up after a few days. Also, if the dough crumbles, add a little more water.

Memorial Day Flower Basket

What You Need: Strawberry basket, construction paper, scissors, 2 pipe cleaners, real or fake flowers.

How You Make It: Cut strips of construction paper slightly narrower than the spaces in the strawberry basket. Weave paper strips in and out, overlapping at ends to secure. Twist ends of pipe cleaner at top of one side of berry basket. Repeat on opposite side. Fill with real or fake flowers.

Baby Food Jar Candle Holder for Mother’s Day

What You Need: baby food jar, colored tissue paper, scissors, paint brush,white glue, ribbon, votive candle.

How You Make It: Pre-cut 4 or 5 colors of tissue paper (or supervise preschooler with safety scissors) to about 1″ in size. Water down some white glue. Apply glue to baby food jar. Place tissue paper over glue. Paint over tissue paper to secure. Once dry, tie neck of jar with pretty ribbon and insert votive candle for Mom.

“We tried it” tip: Paint the glue over the tissue paper gently, or the paper may tear. If it tears, just peel it off or go with the wrinkled look!

Mother’s Day Dried Flower Necklace

What You Need: scissors, 1/8″ hole punch, laminating or “Contact” paper, ball chain, small flower, time (a day or two to dry the flower).

How You Make It: Pick some tiny flowers and dry them between paper towels in a heavy book for a day or two. Lay one piece of Contact paper sticky-side up on a flat surface. Gently place flower onto Contact paper. Cover with another, similarly sized piece of Contact paper. Press to remove air bubbles. Trim to shape of flower, leaving at least half an inch space around the flower. Punch hole near top. Thread ball chain through hole.

“We Tried It” tip: Dry more flowers than you need, as some may crumble or not look that great.

Painted Animal Cracker Pin

What You Need: animal crackers, acrylic paints, small paintbrush, self-adhesive pin back, acrylic lacquer spray.

How You Make It: Paint your animals! Let paint dry and then seal by spraying acrylic lacquer on all surfaces. Once that’s dry, adhere pin back to back of animal cracker to make a great lapel pin gift for Mother’s Day or another occasion.

“We Tried It” Tip: Be sure to spray the acrylic lacquer on all surfaces of the painted animal cracker, or it will crumble and the pin back won’t stick to the back.
